I obtained a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in agriculture and a D.Sc. from London University, UK and a Ph.D. in quantitative genetics from Iowa State University, USA. I am Chartered Statistician (CStat.) and the author of over 200 scientific papers on laboratory animal genetics and related topics.
Before retiring in 2004 I worked in the Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit, Leicester University, and before that the MRC Laboratory Animals Centre.
Since retiring give lectures on the design of animal experiments and, on behalf of Bioscientific Events and the Royal Veterinary College, frequently hold half-day workshops on experimental design and statistics for scientists applying for a project license to work on animals. I am a joint author of The Design of Animal Experiments (Festing MFW, Overend P, Gaines Das R, Cortina Borja M and Berdoy M (2002) Laboratory Animals Ltd., London).
I have received a number of animal welfare-associated awards including the "Recognition Award" from Johns Hopkins University Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, the Doerenkamp-Zbinden Foundation medal of honour and Honorary membership of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). I also received the FELASAl prize in 2010 for my work in promoting the use of inbred strains in toxicity testing.
